Track Plans

Track plans for the first iteration of the Metropolis Atlantic were made the old fashioned way – drawn out to scale on graph paper. For the new railroad, I opted for a computer program. I found Empire Express Deluxe – available in the Apple App Store – to be adequate for my needs.

This approach allowed me to more accurately draw up saved sections of the old layout and maneuver those elements into the new space requirements.

Computer generated track plans for this n-scale multi-level model railroad allow for precision and flexibility in layout design.

Goals were to:

  • Get as in as many aspects of the old layout as possible.
  • Multi-level layout to maximize available space
  • Everything fits.
  • Stick to the standards
  • Lots of staging.
  • Provision for automatic running of trains in the background while operating trains in the foreground.
  • Be flexible enough to allow for innovations that might present themselves during construction
  • Be able to print out at 1″ = 1′ for easy on-site reference and conversion of track plan to the layout
